Virginie T: the grand dame of Champagne

Monday, 08 January 2024 Giulia Santoro, Monday, 08 January 2024 (0 minutes read)

Genetically programmed to become the "Grande Dame of Champagne", Virginie Taittinger is a true champenoise: her family tree boasts 160 years of history dedicated to the art of champagne. Daughter of Catherine de Suarez d'Aulan, former owner of Champagne Piper-Heidsieck, and Claude Taittinger, former president of the house of the same name, with whom she worked side by side for 21 years, Virginie decided in 2006 to embark on a new adventure by creating the Virginie T. brand.

«Bubbles are in my DNA, which is why creating Champagne Virginie T. was natural for me. With my father, I learned to know and passionately love Champagne. Now with my son Ferdinand, I create exceptional cuvées to seduce new generations of enlightened consumers who thirst for modernity».

Maison Virginie T. : a historic family making modern champagnes

"Head, hands and heart" combined with the deep harmony between mother and son are the main ingredients with which the Boutique Maison creates its champagnes with a contemporary style and signature that will leave its mark today and tomorrow.

«It's a rare and beautiful privilege for a mother to be able to share her expertise with her son": Ferdinand Pougatch joined the company in 2015, following Virginie Taittinger's path of subverting traditional codes to create innovative cuvées.

Located in the heart of one of Champagne's most prestigious vineyards, in Sillery, at the foot of the Montagne de Reims, between Reims and Epernay, the Maison Virginie T. reflects its founder's approach to the complex art of Champagne. "Our style is in tune with the times, but it remains true to our values: it's all about having fun. We don't try to make ordinary, predictable wines, on the contrary, we enhance the bouquets of our grapes by letting them blossom over time. All of this is reflected in a process based on careful grape selection: only the best grapes from the vineyards (85% of which are classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru) in the commune of Verzy are harvested to produce just under 80,000 bottles.

Innovative and surprising cuvées and a keen eye for sustainability

With more than 20 different references in its cellar, Maison Virginie T. wants to prove that Champagne has many souls: "When it comes to blending our wines, there are no limits to our creative process. The diversity of our proposals and our international DNA allow us to create bespoke Champagnes. As a result, each cuvée has an innovative and surprising personality, perfectly suited to contemporary tastes. The Château's forward-thinking approach is also reflected in its focus on sustainability and the environment, with initiatives ranging from the care of the vines to the choice of distribution methods. In particular, the estate is currently working on the conversion of its Grand Cru vineyards in order to obtain HVE (Haute valeur environnementale - High Environmental Value) certification, as well as to promote rational viticulture and biodiversity in the vineyards.

The wines of Maison Viriginie T.

Specialising in the production of long-aged champagnes (not all vintages are produced), the Maison favours elegant and powerful blends of Pinot Noir from the Ay and Verzenay areas, as well as Chardonnays from the famous Côte des Blancs, to give each cuvée a broad aromatic expression.

Brut Grand Cuvée V2 6 ans

It is the result of a careful selection of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes from 15 different crus, including 11 Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. This champagne is the result of an exceptional 2008 vintage, with the addition of 15% reserve wines from 2007. After a long cellar ageing of 6 years, the wine has reached the necessary maturity to fully express its complex aromatic potential. On the nose, fresh aromas of red fruits, floral nuances and a light note of bread crust open up. On the palate, creaminess, savouriness and harmony blend elegantly, while the persistent, refined effervescence underlines the finesse of the glass. It goes well with fish dishes and cheeses, and is also excellent with oriental delicacies.

    Brut
